Newport Gwent Dragons have announced Kingsley Jones will continue to lead the region as head coach but have dispensed with the director of rugby role previously occupied by Lyn Jones.

Jones, who joined the Pro12 club as an assistant coach in 2013, has been in charge since last month following the departure of Lyn Jones..

The region will now scrap the director of rugby role in an attempt to revamp their fortunes following a disappointing season which saw them finish third from bottom of the table.

In a statement on the club's official website, chief executive Stuart Davies said: "Kingsley is highly respected by this group of players, his coaching peers in Wales and the wider rugby fraternity, and we absolutely feel that he is the right man to take charge of the team.

"His appointment as head coach though, rather than director of rugby, means that we will be reviewing the roles and responsibilities of the wider management team, whilst Kingsley and I will also discuss bolstering the coaching team to add further support, skills and experience."

Jones joined the Men of Gwent in 2013 as assistant coach, in a combined role while also overseeing the Russian national team, and in 2014 took up his current position of the Welsh region.

On his appointment, 46-year-old Jones who was capped 10 times by Wales, said: "I am delighted to be given the opportunity to lead the region. I am very proud of the fact that I was born and bred in this passionate rugby area and it means a huge amount to me to be given this responsibility.
