Ireland U20s took a step closer to the World Rugby U20 Championship semi-finals with a superb win over New Zealand.

The Irish scored three tries in a 33-24 win in the pool encounter, a result which - combined with their opening victory over Wales - could be enough to take them to the final four of the tournament.

Tries from Adam McBurney, Max Deegan and Greg Jones secured a famous win for the Wolfpuppies over the five-time champions at Manchester City's Academy stadium.

Johnny McPhillips and Bill Johnston added further points with the boot as Nigel Carolan's side took a step closer to the knockout stages of the competition, knowing victory over Georgia will see them into the semi-finals for only the second time.

Try-scorer Deegan said: "It's the stuff of dreams, the moments you dream about in games where you have to score, you need to score, and to do that is honestly unbelievable.

"There is a buzz in the camp and that is going to continue now but we have to take a step back now and focus on Georgia."

England flexed their muscles with a 44-0 victory over Scotland as they stamped their mark on the tournament. Scotland came into the game on the back of a brilliant victory over Australia in the previous round, but were blown away by England as the hosts went top of their pool with the win.

It was an impressive kicking display from fly-half Harry Mallinder, who had his side 6-0 up after 17 minutes.

Jack Walker then scored the first try of the game at the beginning of the second quarter to hand England a 13-0 lead at the break.

England broke free in the second half, with Will Evans crossing in the 55th minute before John Williams dotted down on the hour mark to put England 27-0 up.

Jack Singleton then scored in the 75th minute before Mallinder added a penalty, and Max Malins rounded off an impressive afternoon from the English with a try in the 80th minute.

Wales 10-9 Georgia

Wales Under 20s were almost shocked by a stubborn Georgia side as the Welshmen edged a 10-9 win to keep their semi-final hopes alive. Leon Brown scored an early try, but Georgia's powerful pack and stubborn defence made it difficult for the U20 Six Nations champions to build on the lead.

In the end Jarrod Evans' conversion and penalty were the difference, as Georgia scrum-half Gela Aprasidze landed three penalties to keep the Eastern Europeans in the hunt.

After Ireland's monumental triumph over the All Blacks, Wales needed the win if they were to stay alive in the hunt for a semi-final berth, and their qualification bid got off to the perfect start after prop Brown dotted down after four minutes. But Wales were unable to build on the score, as the stubborn Georgian defence frustrated the Welshmen.

Aprasidze then landed two penalties to hand Wales a 7-6 advantage at the break. When Wales won a penalty from a scrum at the end of the third quarter, Evans gave them a 10-6 lead.

Aprasidze slotted another long-range effort to set up a tense finish with 15 minutes remaining, and Georgia almost stole it near the death with another Aprasidze's penalty, but it landed short as Wales held on for the win.
