Richard Cockerill hired by French side Toulon as a consultant

Richard Cockerill, Leicester Tigers director of rugby

Former Leicester director of rugby Richard Cockerill has joined Toulon as a consultant until the end of the season

The 46-year-old has not been out of work for long, having been sacked by Leicester in the wake of their loss to Saracens on New Year's Day.

He joins three-time European Cup winner Toulon at the request of their head coach Mike Ford, who was in charge at Bath until May last year.

An England hooker during his playing days, Cockerill was rugby director at Welford Road for six years until he was dismissed on Monday, with the Tigers fifth in the table but 15 points behind leaders Wasps.

A Toulon statement read: "At the request of our manager Mike Ford and with the agreement of all the staff of the Rugby Club Toulon, Richard Cockerill will reinforce the staff of the first team of the club in the coming days as a rugby consultant until the end of the season.

"Richard Cockerill, who coached the Leicester Tigers from 2005 to January 2017 as the forwards coach and then as the senior coach, will work under the authority of Mike Ford and in co-operation with forwards coach Marc Dal Maso and skills coach Steve Meehan."
