Alex Cuthbert and Justin Tipuric have both been included in Wales' World Cup squad.

The seven men discarded from Warren Gatland's training squad are Ross Moriarty, Rob Evans, Scott Andrews, Kristian Dacey, Tyler Morgan, Gareth Anscombe, Eli Walker

Cuthbert and Tipuric were uncertain of their places but were named in Gatland's 31-man squad.

Exeter prop Tomas Francis - who was playing university 2XV rugby just three years ago - and Bath lock Dominic Day also make the squad.

Gatland has named only two hookers - Scott Baldwin and Ken Owens - with Dacey the man to lose out.

Justin Tipuric inspired Wales to a bruising victory against Ireland in an eagerly-contested World Cup warm-up in Dublin

Gloucester flanker Moriarty will consider himself unlucky to miss out, but Gatland has gone with the experience of British & Irish Lions blindside Tipuric, whose superb performance against Ireland on Saturday appears to have got him the nod.

In the backs, Cardiff Blues fly-half Anscombe is perhaps the unlucky man, but he is carrying an ankle injury and Gatland said he was not willing to risk him, given Samson Lee and Liam Williams will go into the tournament with knocks.

Man of the Match Justin Tipuric praised Wales’ performance after they beat Ireland 16-10 in their final warm-up match ahead of the World Cup

"We've picked five locks so if people pick up knocks we can cover them. We need to make sure the strong is squad. That was a tough call and a lot of players have worked hard. We're already carrying Samson Lee and Liam Williams with injuries and Gareth Anscombe is unlucky. We felt we couldn't afford to carry more injuries."

Cardiff Blues centre Cory Allen provides cover in midfield, despite not featuring in either of the warm-up games against Ireland with Bristol utility back Matthew Morgan providing a further option.

Gatland said: "Matthew Morgan is someone we think has got a bit of x-factor. He's not 6'4" and 115 kgs - he's quick and has got some skill, and that x-factor is important. He can cover a few positions as well."

He added: "Some of the decisions were the toss of a coin. Those players that have missed out, you feel for them massively.

"It is incredibly disappointing for those players that miss out. It's hard, but you have got to accept that is the nature of professional sport and we are entrusted to make what we believe are the right calls."
