Frans Steyn was sent off for a high tackle on Johnny Sexton during Montpellier's Champions Cup hammering by Leinster.
With the French side trailing 14-3, the South African fly-half raced out of the line on 26 minutes but caught Sexton with a high, reckless challenge.
After consulting with the television match official, referee JP Doyle issued a red card to Steyn, leaving Montpellier with a mountain to climb.
Leinster extended their lead on the half-hour when brilliant play by Adam Byrne saw the wing cross in the corner, and went on to score eight tries with Jack Conan grabbing a hat-trick.
Leinster's 57-3 over Montpellier saw them become the first team to qualify for the Champions Cup quarter-finals.
There are four more Champions Cup games live on Sky Sports this weekend. Injury-hit Connacht can stay in the hunt for a first quarter-final appearance when they face Zebre on Saturday, with Northampton also facing Castres at the same time.
Later on Saturday sees Glasgow Warriors host Munster in what promises to be the game of the weekend, before Saracens travel to Scarlets on Sunday seeking a record-breaking 14th victory.
