Highlanders fly-half Lima Sopoaga produced a sensational piece of skill to open up the Hurricanes defence during their Super Rugby clash in Wellington.
After winning lineout ball inside their own half, scrum-half Aaron Smith fed Sopoaga, who turned his back to the onrushing defence and produced an overhead kick into space that centre Matt Faddes gathered at full speed.
Sopoaga's brilliance did not result in a try as the Hurricanes forced a turnover on their own tryline, but his kicking and distribution in difficult conditions would have impressed All Blacks coach Steve Hansen in the race for the No 10 shirt.
There was little to choose between the teams during a gripping contest but Ardie Savea snatched victory at the death when he broke through three tackles to score his second try.
The 27-20 win saw the Hurricanes move ahead of their opponents into third in the New Zealand Conference.
