Eddie Jones has emerged as the odds-on favourite to become the next England head coach following a run of significant bets.

The former Australia and Japan head coach has been cut from 5/1 to just 1/2 to succeed Stuart Lancaster, replacing former favourite Jake White at the head of Sky Bet's next England coach market.

While White seemingly remains in contention at 4/1, the majority of other candidates drifted significantly in the market, with the likes of Australia's Michael Cheika and Wales' Warren Gatland ruling themselves out of the running.

Jones, led Japan to three victories at the 2015 World Cup, including their remarkable upset against South Africa, and was appointed as head coach of South African Super Rugby side the Stormers just a day after Lancaster left his post.

Stormers insist they have had no approach and are confident he will be in place when their season starts in Febuary but it hasn't stopped a flood of interest in Jones from the punters.

Sky Bet's David Sykes said: "We had a wide-open market for week following Lancaster's departure, with White narrowly favourite and attracting the majority of bets, while Jones sat shortly behind with little interest at an unchanged 5/1.

"However, we saw a sudden surge of stakes on Jones on Monday night, giving us an odds-on favourite for the first time since we opened betting."
