England wing Jonny May appears set to miss the RBS 6 Nations after suffering a “significant” knee injury which requires surgery.

Gloucester back May limped off in the 42nd minute of last Sunday's draw with Harlequins after hurting his left knee while attempting a clearance.

It remains unclear how long the 25-year-old will be sidelined for but he will see a specialist in London on Tuesday to get a clearer prognosis before going under the knife.

"Jonny has suffered a pretty significant knee injury that requires surgery," Gloucester director of rugby David Humphreys told the Gloucester Citizen.

"He's seeing a specialist on Tuesday and based on the outcome of that we will have a much clearer picture on what needs to be done.

"Most importantly, it is a huge blow for Jonny to suffer an injury like that at this stage of the season. But knowing him and his dedication, he will leave no stone unturned in his recovery."

May's absence would be a blow for new coach Eddie Jones as he had established himself alongside Anthony Watson as England's first choice wing pairing in a dangerous back-line.

England have already lost centre Henry Slade, back row Dave Ewers and prop Kieran Brookes to injury for all, or part, of the Six Nations.

Jones' first competitive game as head coach will come on February 6 when England travel to Murrayfield to take on Scotland.

A trip to Italy follows, before home games against Ireland and Wales, with the campaign ending with a trip to Paris to face France.
