England head coach Eddie Jones has named six uncapped players in his squad for the autumn internationals.
Bath lock Charlie Ewels, Sale full-back Mike Haley, Wasps back-row Nathan Hughes, Saracens fly-half Alex Lozowski, Harlequins prop Kyle Sinckler and Worcester centre Ben Te'o - who toured Australia in the summer but did not play - could all be in line for debuts during the four Tests.
Experienced back-row Tom Wood is back in the squad, having not played for over a year, and there are also recalls for lock Dave Attwood, wing Jonny May and No 8 Ben Morgan, but there is no place for fly-half Danny Cipriani.
The 29-year-old Wood has been capped 42 times but was the subject of criticism from Jones in January and appeared to be out of favour having not been included in any of the Australian's previous training camps.
However, he returns to the fold as England face an injury crisis at flanker with possible candidates James Haskell, Jack Clifford, Sam Jones, Mike Williams and Maro Itoje all having been ruled out due to injury.
Jones laughed off his previous dismissal of Jones, saying: "What can I say, he's got stronger with longer hair and a beard. He's like Samson.
"He's done really well. I've been very impressed with his work rate and I've been in contact with him since I named my first ever squad."
England are unbeaten under Jones, having won nine from nine, including a Six Nations Grand Slam and a 3-0 series whitewash of Australia.
They will depart on Sunday for a week-long training camp in Portugal before opening their autumn series against South Africa on November 12 with Fiji, Argentina and Australia also visiting Twickenham in the following weeks.
Jones said: "Our training camp in Portugal is a great opportunity to spend a week together, focus on putting our game plans in place and for new players to understand the England way.
"We're looking forward to being back in front of a passionate Twickenham crowd and I'm confident we can prepare well and put together a matchday 23 which is full of pride, energy and commitment to give South Africa the game of their lives.
"With a number of influential players missing through injury, we have two weeks to prepare a robust and resilient team to meet the challenges set for us."
