Former England fly-half Andy Goode has come out of retirement to join Newcastle Falcons on a surprise three-month deal.

The 35-year-old and scrum-half Jamie Booth have both agreed short-term contracts with the Aviva Premiership's bottom club, following injuries to Mike Delany and Ruki Tipuna.

Goode - capped 17 times between 2005 and 2009 - was a key member of the Wasps team in season 2014/15 and has scored 2,228 points in 229 Premiership appearances.

In their first game at the Ricoh Arena, he equalled the league's record for the most points scored by a single player when he recorded 33 in a 48-16 win over London Irish.

Goode has also played for Leicester Tigers, Saracens and Worcester and had a spell in France with Top 14 side Brive.

He had been forced to stop playing in September after struggling to overcome persistent injury problems but has now decided to try to resurrect his career.

Booth, 21, joins the Falcons from Manawatu Turbos in New Zealand and both players are in contention to make their debuts at home to Bath on Saturday.

Newcastle director of rugby Dean Richards told their official club website: "We're delighted to welcome Andy and Jamie to Kingston Park.

"There is obviously disappointment that they come through injuries to Mike and Ruki.

"With those two unavailable for the immediate future, the opportunity to bring in additional players of the quality of Andy and Jamie, to supplement what we already have, was great.

"Andy will bring a huge amount of experience while Jamie has been impressing a lot of people over in New Zealand and has the opportunity to do the same here at Kingston Park."

Goode added: "I'm looking forward to the challenge after having four months to recuperate and let my body recover.

"It's a short-term opportunity but I want to do as much as I can for the Falcons.

"I have a huge amount of respect for Dean who I go back a long time with and who gave me my first opportunity at Leicester 17 years ago."
