Losing World Cup finalists Australia will seek a first grand slam since 1984 as part of a five-Test tour of Europe next year.

The Wallabies have attempted to beat England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland on the same tour on nine occasions but managed the feat only once, under the coaching of Allan Jones 31 years ago.

They last tried it in 2013, but wins over Ireland, Scotland and Wales all came after they had been beaten 20-13 by Stuart Lancaster's England side at Twickenham.

The five Tests are scheduled for consecutive Saturdays, starting with Wales in Cardiff on November 5.

They go to Murrayfield to face Scotland on November 12, face France in Paris on November 19, travel on to Dublin to take on Ireland on November 26 before ending their tour at Twickenham on December 3.

The touring party will also play a couple of midweek games, but those are yet to be arranged.

The newly-announced tour completes a busy 2016 calendar for Australia, who will host England for three Tests in June before the Rugby Championship, which will see matches home and away against New Zealand, South Africa and Argentina.

The Wallabies and All Blacks will square off three times for the Bledisloe Cup with the third match scheduled to be played in Auckland on October 22, just two weeks before the opening Test against Wales.

Australian Rugby Union chief executive Bill Pulver said: "The grand slam is one of the rarest achievements in the game and has been a notoriously difficult one for the Wallabies over time with only one successful attempt out of nine.

"The 1984 team etched their names into Australian rugby folklore and as the years have passed their achievement has become more legendary. It is a great opportunity for the 2016 Qantas Wallabies to create their own slice of history."
