Jonah Lomu tributes pour in after All Blacks legend's sudden death

Tributes to Jonah Lomu have poured in following the former New Zealand international's death at the age of 40.

Rugby union players past and present have taken to social media to pay tribute to the All Blacks legend and sporting stars, politicians and fans from around the world have also expressed their shock and sadness at Lomu's sudden death.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said: "Deeply saddened to hear of Jonah Lomu's unexpected passing this morning. The thoughts of the entire country are with his family. He truly is and was a legend of the game."

Former New Zealand captain Sean Fitzpatrick tweeted: "Our thoughts are with the @JONAHTALILOMU family tonight. A very special person. @AllBlacks."

Fans in New Zealand have been expressing their shock at the sudden death of Lomu

Zinzan Brooke, another former team-mate of Lomu, said: "It's amazing what he did in that '95 World Cup. He launched himself on the international scene and changed the way the game was played in an instant. He was very calm but you knew you had a force within the team. He was phenomenal.

"When you think of the World Cup you will always go back to Jonah running round or over opponents. You'll always remember the superstar that was Jonah Lomu. I'm still in shock now realising a great friend has gone."

Current All Blacks favourite Dan Carter tweeted: "I still can't believe the sad news. Love & thoughts go out to Jonahs family #RIPJonah."

Former Australia international Tim Horan said: "It's a very big hole that he's left in the game. When I went to the United States just after the 1995 Rugby World Cup, I spoke to someone there and they said, 'All we know about rugby is Jonah Lomu', and that's the imprint he had on the game.

"He was a global superstar and even young kids now, as young as five and six, still know who Jonah Lomu is."

Former England star Jonny Wilkinson tweeted: "I am so, so devastated to hear of the passing away of Jonah Lomu. The greatest superstar and just a fabulous human being. Deeply saddened"

Former Wales fly-half Jonathan Davies said: "Can't believe that Jonah Lomu has passed away. Was with him and his wife and family for an evening last month. 

"So sad, life is so cruel. RIP Jonah you were a true legend and a gentleman.You changed the game of rugby and will be sorely missed. My thoughts are with your family."

Former England football captain David Beckham wrote on Instagram: "So sad to hear the news about this amazing giant of a man. A sporting hero and one of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet. A credit to his country, his family and to the sport that he passionately played. Jonah you will be missed."

Lomu, who changed the game of rugby union, has died at the aged of 40

South Africa wing Bryan Habana also took to Instagram, writing: "His on field fearlessness was matched by his off field humility. So sad to wake to the news of Jonah Lomu's passing.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. It was a privilege to have met you, to have been inspired by you and to watch you make the biggest impact we have ever seen on the game we love so dearly."

Australia full-back Israel Folau, who, like Lomu, is of Tongan descent, said: "Rest in peace to my brother Jonah Lomu. Going to miss you bro."
