Connacht have pulled out of signing Fijian international Eroni Vasiteri after the centre was handed a nine-week ban for eye-gouging.

The incident occurred during a game between Canberra Vikings and Fijian Drua, Vasiteri's current team, in the National Rugby Championship on September 29.

Vasiteri, who spent the 2015/16 season with Top 14 side Agen, agreed to sign for the Irish province on a one-year deal last month and was due to join up with the team in the coming weeks.

A statement on Connacht's official website said: "Connacht Rugby can confirm that following discussions with Eroni Vasiteri it has been agreed by both parties that Vasiteri's planned move to Connacht will not now proceed.

"Due to a recent suspension Vasiteri would not have been in a position to proceed with the move until later in the season.

"Connacht Rugby wishes Eroni Vasiteri every success in his future career and hope to make an announcement on an alternative signing shortly."
