Scarlets have suffered a major injury blow ahead of the start of their Guinness PRO12 campaign after No 8 Morgan Allen was ruled out for up to four months.

The forward, who joined Scarlets from Ospreys during the summer, suffered a ruptured bicep during a training session on Tuesday and had an operation on Thursday.

Allen was likely to feature in Saturday's Sky Live away game against Glasgow Warriors after making a good impression in the pre-season friendlies Jersey and Newport Gwent Dragons.

However, Scarlets will now face the champions at Scotstoun without the 25-year-old and he will be sidelined "for up to 16 weeks" according to the region's official website.

Head of medical Andrew Walker told the website: "Morgan's surgery went well on Thursday and he will start his rehabilitation next week once his cast is removed with a progressive loading program."
