Billy Vunipola has been forced to withdraw from the upcoming British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand because of a shoulder injury.

The Saracens No 8 has been managing the injury but it now requires further medical treatment.

Wasps back row James Haskell has been called up as Vunipola's replacement and he will join up with the squad after next week's Aviva Premiership final.

"It is really disappointing for Billy and we know how much he was looking forward to joining the squad," Lions head coach Warren Gatland said.

"We really appreciate his honesty in making this decision and wish him luck with his recovery.
