Gary Ballance scored 70 and Moeen Ali 63 but England were dismissed by Pakistan for 297 on day one at Edgbaston with Sohail Khan taking five wickets on his first Test appearance for five years.

Pakistan won the toss and surprised many by electing to field but they will feel vindicated after taking 10 England wickets, with Khan (5-96) getting his five-for with last ball of the day.

Alex Hales (17), Joe Root (3) and skipper Alastair Cook (45) were all back in the pavilion by lunch with James Vince (39) and Jonny Bairstow (12) following in the afternoon session.

Rahat (2-83), who trapped Cook lbw earlier in the day, then had Woakes (9) caught behind, before Mohammad Amir (2-53) removed both Stuart Broad (13) and Ali.
