Mark Cavendish will compete in two events after being confirmed as part of a 21-strong Great Britain line-up for the Track Cycling World Championships in London next month.

Cavendish is attempting to secure a place in the British team for the Olympic Games in Rio this summer, and he will take part in the omnium as well as renewing his partnership with Sir Bradley Wiggins in the madison event.

The sprinter won his first stage of the 2016 road season at the Tour of Qatar last week and also claimed overall victory in the five-day race - he has not raced in a Track World Championships since 2009.

Britain's team includes six gold medallists from London 2012 - Laura Trott, Joanna Rowsell Shand, Ed Clancy, Steven Burke, Jason Kenny and Phil Hindes - as well as first senior world championship calls for Chris Latham and Emily Nelson.

The event gets underway at Lee Valley VeloPark on March 2 and runs for five days.

Great Britain technical director Shane Sutton said: "We've selected the strongest squad available to us for these worlds - we're in good shape and the team we've selected is close to the Olympic model.

"It's great to see Ed Clancy and Katie Archibald included on the squad and that's testament to the hard work of the Performance Support Team who have ably led the rehabilitation of these riders following their respective injuries.

"Winning is always a key objective for any sports team and we're sticking to our long-term goal which is success at the Olympic Games in Rio so we'll be making performance decisions based on this strategy.

"That said, there's been a marked increase in momentum within the squad recently and we've been seeing some promising numbers in training, so I'm expecting to see some strong performances across the board and spectators will be guaranteed to see some world-class competition."

Great Britain team:

Women's sprint: Becky James, Katy Marchant, Jess Varnish.

Women's endurance: Katie Archibald, Elinor Barker, Ciara Horne, Emily Nelson, Joanna Rowsell Shand, Laura Trott.
