Before she became Olympic champion, Katie Taylor had a career in football representing the Republic of Ireland at senior level

Katie Taylor won her first title as a professional boxer last month, stopping Nina Meinke to claim the WBA Intercontinental lightweight strap.

Fighting at Wembley Stadium on the undercard of Anthony Joshua's clash with Wladimir Klitschko sounds like the stuff that dreams are made of, but things could have turned out very differently for Bray boxer Taylor.

The five-time world amateur champion has always been a natural athlete and could easily have been playing professional football. The London 2012 Olympic gold medallist represented the Republic of Ireland at international level before concentrating on boxing.

Taylor was a talented right winger in her youth, and, on a rare break from training stateside, the Irish sensation returned to Newtown FC - the club she turned out for as a youngster in the Wicklow and District Schoolboys/Girls League.
