Captain Jason Holder scored an unbeaten 202 as Windies set England a mammoth 628 to win the first Test in Barbados.
Holder declared immediately after he had smeared Keaton Jennings to the boundary to bring up a maiden 200 from 229 balls, an innings which included 23 fours and eight sixes and came during an unbroken stand of 295 with Shane Dowrich (116no) for the seventh wicket.
The partnership propelled Windies to 415-6 as England went wicketless at Kensington Oval, a day after they had been skittled for 77 as 18 wickets fell.
Holder's score is the third best by a No 8 batsman in Test cricket, behind only Wasim Akram's unbeaten 257 and Imtiaz Ahmed's 209 for Pakistan, against Zimbabwe and New Zealand respectively.
The highest successful run-chase at Kensington Oval is the 311-9 scored by Windies against Australia in 1998-1999, while England's highest Test run chase remains the 332-7 chalked up against Australia in 1928-29.
The world-record Test run-chase is the 418 made by Windies against Australia in 2003.
