Adam Lyth completed a double-century before the Specsavers County Championship Division One clash between Surrey and Yorkshire at the Kia Oval ended in a draw after 142 overs were lost over the opening two days.
The former England opener batsman struck 17 fours and five sixes in an impressive 291-ball 202 that allowed Yorkshire to post 407, a first-innings lead of 140.
But the visitors' hopes of pushing for a dramatic final-day victory, like they did against Surrey earlier in the season, faded as the game petered out into a draw at 5pm with the hosts 106-1 in 38 overs, Dominic Sibley unbeaten on 54.
Relegation-threatened Surrey banked 10 points for their fourth draw of the campaign while Yorkshire, who move up to fourth in the table, took away 13.
The visitors left themselves a minimum of 52 overs to pull off an unlikely win but were only able pick up the wicket of Rory Burns (14) with a neatly taken caught and bowled by Azeem Rafiq,
The day began with all eyes on Lyth, who lost his first partner of the day after 75 minutes' play when Zafar Ansari bowled Steven Patterson for 51 to end a fourth-wicket stand of 91
Adil Rashid (16) and Tim Bresnan (3) went in quick succession after Lyth had brought up his 150 and Liam Plunkett plundered three fours and two sixes in a 37-run cameo before he was run out after lunch.
Lyth reached his double-hundred with an uppercut for six that cleared the ropes at third man off a Stuart Meaker bouncer but he went after Meaker again with the next ball, miscuing to allow stand-in wicketkeeper Steven Davies to take a simple catch.
Though they had 400 on the board for maximum bonus points, Yorkshire batted on allowing Tom Curran to dismiss Andrew Hodd following a stunning diving catch in the covers by Burns. David Willey then holed out to deep mid-wicket to end the innings.
Burns was the only wicket Yorkshire managed to capture during Surrey's second innings with Dominic Sibley ending the day unbeaten on 54 for the hosts.
In Division Two, Dan Lawrence hit his third first-class century as Essex grabbed the initiative on the second day of their match with Gloucestershire at Cheltenham.
The England Under-19 batsman stroked 127 off 177 balls, with 19 fours, to help his side post 333 all out in reply to the hosts' 255.
Ryan ten Doeschate contributed 52 to a fifth-wicket stand of 102 with Lawrence, while James Foster hit a rapid 47 in the closing overs. Josh Shaw was Gloucestershire's most successful bowler taking 4-72.
Earlier, the hosts had added 37 to their overnight score of 218-8, Craig Miles making 58 and sharing a ninth-wicket partnership of 49 with Liam Norwell, who made 31, to earn a second batting bonus point.
Jamie Porter took the last two wickets for figures of 3-67, while first-day hero Matt Quinn finished with 7-76.
