The pick of the action from the first day of England's third Test match against India in Mohali

Jonny Bairstow top-scored with 89, though England lost eight wickets, on day one of the third Test against India, after having won the toss and decided to bat first.

Click on the video above to see the best of the action from the first day in Mohali as Bairstow lead an England recovery after the top order tumbled before late wickets saw the tourists close on 268-8.

India were sloppy in the field, guilty of dropping Alastair Cook twice off Mohammed Shami, and Bairstow put down by Parthiv Patel behind the stumps when on 54 and 89.

Cook was first let-off on three by Ravindra Jadeja at third slip, while Ravichandran Ashwin dropped an absolute sitter at midwicket with the England captain on 23.

Ashwin at least made amends by dismissing Cook (27) caught behind with his first ball, an over after Joe Root (15) fell lbw to Jayant Yadav.

Earlier, Haseeb Hameed (nine) was undone by a beauty from Umesh Yadav that lobbed up off his glove to gully, while Moeen Ali (16) was the fourth wicket to fall just prior to lunch, top-edging an attempted pull off Shami.

Bairstow and Ben Stokes (29) put on 57 for the fifth wicket to aid England's cause before the latter was stumped when skipping past a straight on from Jadeja.

Bairstow brought up his half century soon after, while Jos Buttler - in his first Test back in over a year - had struck a counter-attacking 38 not out off 56 balls to inch England past 200 by tea.

Buttler (43) fell soon after the break through, chipping the ball to Virat Kohli at short extra cover off Jadeja as he tried to get England moving again after a tight spell of Indian bowling, ending a partnership of 69.

A stand of 45 between Bairstow and Chris Woakes further boosted England before the former, having been dropped the previous delivery by Parthiv, was trapped lbw by Jayant.

Umesh picked up his second wicket of the day in the penultimate over, pegging back Woakes' (25) off-stump, leaving Adil Rashid (four not out) and Gareth Batty (0 not out) with plenty of work to do on the second morning.
