Root scored a fine century on his first day in the job at Lord's against South Africa; perhaps he paid attention to Charles Colvile's dos and don'ts for the captaincy?

Root will be wise to take after Graham Gooch and his run-scoring feats as skipper, while trying not to lose his temper like Mike Gatting, or the toss like Sky Sports' very own Nasser Hussain.

Further advice for the fledgling captain includes to keep calm, keep the media onside, get on well with your coach, and try to earn yourself an Ashes win or two!
