South Africa's Aiden Markram missed out on a ton in his debut innings as he was run out for 97 on day one of the first Test against Bangladesh.
The 22-year-old was dismissed after being sent back by opening partner Dean Elgar (128no) after the latter had prodded to point, Markram's exit ending an opening stand of 196 in Potchefstroom.
Markram would have become the sixth South African to score a century on Test debut after Jacques Rudolph, Alviro Petersen, current skipper Faf du Plessis, Stiaan van Zyl and Stephen Cook.
Elgar completed a 176-ball hundred two balls after Markram's dismissal and helped South Africa progress to 298-1 by the close - Hashim Amla (68no) striking his 36th Test fifty during an unbroken stand of 102.
Elgar's hundred was his ninth in Test cricket and second in three games, following his 136 against England at The Oval's 100th Test in late July.
Bangladesh toiled after surprisingly electing to bowl in the second Test to be staged in Potchefstroom and first since they lost to the Proteas by an innings and 160 runs in 2002.
South Africa, now led by former England bowling coach Ottis Gibson, picked two debutants in their XI, with Markram joined by seam-bowling all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo.
