Sky Sports statistician Benedict Bermange looks at the numbers as Joe Root breaks from tradition to bowl first in Adelaide.

Joe Root became the first captain to bowl after winning the toss in the seventh day-night Test to date. He also became the first captain to bowl first in a Test at Adelaide in 26 Tests since Mohammad Azharuddin bowled first in 1992.

The last instance of England playing consecutive Test matches with all 11 players born in England was way back in August 1984. Since then, England have had only eight matches with all 11 players born in England of the 387 Tests they have played.

This was David Warner's second successive innings of 47 in Tests at Adelaide, following his second innings against South Africa last November.

Craig Overton joined Keshav Maharaj and Yasir Shah in taking Steve Smith as their first Test wicket.

Both Cameron Bancroft and Usman Khawaja lost their wickets without adding to their previous score going into an interval.

When he reached 29, Steve Smith became the ninth Australian to score 3,000 runs while captaining the side and the joint-third fastest of all Test captains to get there:
