Ross Taylor scored a half-century on debut before Tom Helm and Nathan Sowter shared eight wickets as Middlesex beat Surrey by 37 runs in Thursday's Royal London One-Day Cup derby at The Oval.

New Zealand international Taylor, into the Middlesex side for rested England white-ball captain Eoin Morgan, made 64 from 78 balls before he became one of four victims for veteran spinner Gareth Batty (4-29).

However, Taylor's side were indebted to runs from bowlers Toby Roland-Jones (45), Sowter (31) and Steven Finn (13no) as they rallied from 185-8 to 277 all out against a Surrey side shorn of numerous players through injury, including Jason Roy (back), Tom Curran (calf) and Ollie Pope (shoulder).

Ben Foakes (71) notched a third straight score over fifty to keep Surrey afloat but when he was ninth man out, caught at cover off Helm (4-40), the hosts' hopes were extinguished - Sowter (4-37) with the final wicket as Surrey were dismissed for 240 to slip to a third defeat in four matches.

Middlesex, though, have won three from four to move level on points with South Group table-toppers Somerset and second-placed Hampshire, albeit having played a game more.

Glamorgan and Kent's match in Cardiff was washed out after just 15 overs - the hosts reaching 68-2 before the rain with captain Chris Cooke hitting 29 and Marnus Labuschagne scoring an unbeaten 27.
