Former England batsman Michael Carberry has backed Kevin Pietersen's call for franchises to be introduced to county cricket's T20 competition.

Hampshire star Carberry, 34, struck 50 off 36 for the Perth Scorchers on Sunday to help them past Pietersen's Melbourne Stars and into the final of the Big Bash tournament in Australia.

Earlier in the day, news broke of Pietersen's claims that the current county system in England produces 'muppets' and Carberry also believes change is necessary.

He said of the Big Bash: "They've just got it right. The franchise system is something that the players back home have been crying out for for years. It works.

"You get the best of the best playing against each other in a short competition and with that you attract the best from overseas as well.

"All that added to the melting pot - the kit, the atmosphere and the way the games are sold to the kids makes for a great product.

"The players back home would definitely buy into a franchise system because our competition could do with a little revamp.
