Title chasers Durham need 46 more runs to beat Somerset with five wickets remaining in the Specsavers County Championship Division One after another thrilling day at Taunton.

Hosts Somerset looked out for the count when, trailing by five after the first innings, they slumped to 0-3, 21-5 and then 33-6 in their second knock.

But the lower order got them up to 180 all out and they then reduced Durham to 130-5, setting up a potentially very exciting Saturday morning session.

Durham began day two on 154-7 in their first innings but ended up reaching 189 and securing a narrow lead, thanks mainly to Adam Hickety (36 not out) and Mark Wood (27).

Jack Leach (5-69) and Roelof van der Merwe (4-59) took the bowling honours for the hosts, who then collapsed to 0-3 within seven balls when they batted again.

Chris Rushworth (2-28) removed Marcus Trescothick (0) and Chris Rogers (0) with the second and fifth balls of the innings and it was ducks for all of the top three when Graham Onions (4-50) had Tom Abell (second golden duck of the game) caught behind with the first ball of the second over.

The impressive Onions also removed James Hildreth (8) and Peter Trego (0) before Mark Wood (2-51) got involved and dismissed Jim Allenby.

But the Somerset revival then got underway, Van der Merwe (47) continuing his fine all-round match as he added 72 for the seventh wicket with Craig Overton (38).

The hosts then slipped to 128-9 but last-wicket pair Ryan Davies (49) and Tim Groenewald (20 not out) added a hugely important 52.

Durham then set off in pursuit of 176 to win and were 1-1 when Overton trapped Keaton Jennings (0) lbw for a golden duck in the first over.

Overton (2-31) struck again when Scott Borthwick (9) pulled a short ball to Hildreth at mid-on but Michael Richardson (33) and Mark Stoneman got the chase back on track with a third-wicket stand of 69.

Gordon Muchall (17) and Stoneman (a crucial 57) then added 30 for the fourth wicket but that man Van der Merwe (2-40) popped up to dismiss them both before the close and keep Somerset's hopes alive.

Over at Lord's, Nick Gubbins (82) led the way as leaders Middlesex reached  249-5 in reply to Surrey's score of 415.

Gubbins has now scored 849 championship runs at an average of 65.30 this season and he got close to a third hundred in as many first class innings at Lord's.

Nick Compton was bowled by Stuart Meaker for 11 but Gubbins was given solid support by Dawid Malan (31) and George Bailey (37) before John Simpson put together a watchful and important 52 not out to keep Middlesex in with a chance of getting up towards Surrey's total.

Ben Foakes had earlier finished on 63 not out as Surrey added 31 runs to their overnight 384-8.

Yorkshire lost late wickets to Rikki Clarke of Warwickshire on day two at Headingley and closed on 78-5, to lead by 156.

The hosts lost their final first innings wicket in the morning for the addition of five runs to be bowled out for 257 but then dismissed their visitors for 179.

Ryan Sidebottom (3-41), making his first senior appearance since April after an ankle injury, picked up his 400th first-class victim for Yorkshire, and Adil Rashid (3-32) was also among the wickets.

Warwickshire were 40-4 after Jonathan Trott (3) and Ian Bell (2) failed to fire, but recovered somewhat thanks to the efforts of Sam Hain (48) and Clarke (50 not out), who had a superb day.

Nonetheless, Yorkshire had a handy lead of 78 and openers Adam Lyth (20) and Alex Lees (39 not out) built on it with a stand of 43.

But the irrepressible Clarke then had Lyth and Travis Head (2) caught at first slip, before taking a catch in that position himself, as Andrew Gale (1) pushed defensively at Jeetan Patel.

And Clarke (4-24) was not finished, clean bowling Jack Leaning (3) and pinning nightwatchman Steven Patterson lbw for a duck, before Lees and Rashid made it to the close with the game nicely poised.

Elsewhere, Will Smith made his highest first class score as Hampshire posted 548-6 declared against Lancashire at the Ageas Bowl.

Having resumed on 99 not out, stand-in skipper Smith went on to bat nine-and-a-half hours for 210, eclipsing his previous best of 201 not out for Durham against Surrey in 2008.

He cut the first ball of the morning for four to reach his first ton since September 2014 and went on to reach a double-century, before lofting Steven Croft to Simon Kerrigan at wide mid-off.

Smith was given sterling support by the in-form Ryan McLaren, who helped add 129 for the fifth wicket and finished the innings unbeaten on 81.

Lancashire were given 25 overs to bat in the evening, and lost Tom Smith (4) in the seventh over, caught behind off Gareth Berg.

But Haseeb Hameed (39 not out) and Luke Procter (21 not out) took the visitors to 70-1 at stumps on day two, still 478 behind with the follow-on set at 399.
