Twenty-two wickets tumble on turning pitch at Taunton as Somerset boss Lancashire

Rory Burns passed 1,000 Specsavers County Championship runs for the fifth season running as Division One leaders Surrey impressed with the bat after being inserted by 2017 winners Essex at Chelmsford.

Surrey skipper Burns, the chief contender to replace outgoing England opener Alastair Cook, became the first man to four figures in the Championship this term but missed out on a fourth century as he was bowled by Australian seamer Peter Siddle for 90.

The Londoners, who began this round of fixtures with a 32-point lead over Somerset, closed day one at Essex on 256-4 - South Africa's Dean Elgar striking 75 but England's Ollie Pope out for 21. SCORECARD

Somerset and relegation-threatened Lancashire played out a remarkable 22-wicket day at Taunton, one which ended with the visitors 7-2 in their second innings trailing by 86 runs. SCORECARD

Lancashire, just two points above the bottom two, were bundled out for 99 first time around as home spinner Jack Leach claimed 5-28 and paceman Jamie Overton bagged 3-32.

Somerset were reduced to 104-8 before Lewis Gregory's unbeaten 63, plus Overton (24) and Leach (17), lifted them to 192, and Leach then took his tally of scalps for the day to seven by removing Lancashire opener Alex Davies and nightwatchman Matt Parkinson.

Bat bossed ball at Trent Bridge as Nottinghamshire reached 332-7 against second-bottom Yorkshire, with recent recruit from Derbyshire, Ben Slater, hitting 109 and Ben Duckett striking 80 on debut following his switch from Northamptonshire before four late wickets fell. SCORECARD

But Worcestershire also struggled with the blade, slumping to 68-4 - Daryl Mitchell caught and bowled by Fidel Edwards for 41 - before bad light brought a premature end to the day with the Pears trailing by 123,

In Division Two, leaders Warwickshire reached 184-6 at home to Durham with Jonathan Trott, who will retire at the end of the season, top-scoring with an unbeaten 67. SCORECARD

Second-placed Kent rebounded from being skittled for 137 by Northants to reduce their opponents to 71-8 by stumps - New Zealand seamer Matt Henry tearing through the away side with 6-31. SCORECARD

Sussex and Leicestershire, who are also in the promotion shake-up, are meeting at Hove - the hosts closed on 323-8 as Tom Haines, Luke Wells, Ben Brown and Chris Jordan notched half-centuries. SCORECARD

Gloucestershire's Chris Dent backed up his unbeaten 214 against Leicestershire last time out with 82 as the West Country side scored 208-7 against Middlesex at Bristol. SCORECARD
