Rory Burns passed 1,000 Specsavers County Championship runs for the fifth season running as Division One leaders Surrey impressed with the bat after being inserted by 2017 winners Essex at Chelmsford.
Surrey skipper Burns, the chief contender to replace outgoing England opener Alastair Cook, became the first man to four figures in the Championship this term but missed out on a fourth century as he was bowled by Australian seamer Peter Siddle for 90.
The Londoners, who began this round of fixtures with a 32-point lead over Somerset, closed day one at Essex on 256-4 - South Africa's Dean Elgar striking 75 but England's Ollie Pope out for 21. SCORECARD

Lancashire, just two points above the bottom two, were bundled out for 99 first time around as home spinner Jack Leach claimed 5-28 and paceman Jamie Overton bagged 3-32.
Somerset were reduced to 104-8 before Lewis Gregory's unbeaten 63, plus Overton (24) and Leach (17), lifted them to 192, and Leach then took his tally of scalps for the day to seven by removing Lancashire opener Alex Davies and nightwatchman Matt Parkinson.
