Jimmy Adams has stepped down as club captain of Hampshire.
The opening batsman took over from Dominic Cork at the end of the 2011 season and led his home county to the Clydesdale Bank 40 trophy in 2012 and LV= County Championship Division Two title in 2014.
But they struggled during the 2015 in the top flight, narrowly avoiding relegation on the last day of the season.
Hampshire have not announced who will be taking over, though batsman James Vince - who is the limited overs captain - will be favourite.
Adams, who will continue as a player, told the club's official website: "It has been a great honour to captain Hampshire, but now is the right time to move on. It was certainly tough at times, but I can look back on my time as captain with fond memories and I'd like think we have moved in the right direction since I took over.
"Securing promotion from Championship Division Two was one of the primary goals, so I'm pleased that was achieved.
"It's a nice feeling to know I'll be able to relax a bit more next year and just concentrate on my batting, but we will all have a better understanding of what it takes to do well in Division One."
Hampshire's director of cricket Giles White said: "I'd like to thank Jimmy for all of his hard work and commitment over the past four seasons. He has been an outstanding club captain and should be very proud of what he has achieved.
"Jimmy still has a huge amount to offer, he is a model professional and continues to have a positive influence on those around him. His advice and support will be invaluable as the club looks ahead to its next phase."
