Doug Insole, former England player and administrator, dies at 91

Former England batsman Doug Insole has died at the age of 91.

The news was announced by Insole's former county Essex, for whom he was an ex-captain, chairman and president.

As well as a close association with the Chelmsford-based club, he spent almost two decades as an international selector and is a former chairman of the Test and County Cricket Board.

Born in east London, Insole played nine Tests for England between 1950 and 1957, scoring 408 runs, one century, with a batting average of 27.19.

He played a total of 450 First-Class matches, compiling more than 25 thousand runs, 54 Tons, at an average of 37.61.

As a student he captained Cambridge University, spent 20 years on the board of the MCC and served as its president in 2007.

A short statement from Essex CCC, read: "It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of former player, captain, chairman and president, Doug Insole who passed away peacefully at home last night, at the age of 91 years.
