Essex spinner Tim Phillips has decided to retire from cricket with immediate effect.

The 33-year-old has been a key member of the Essex squad since his debut in 1999.

Over the last few years he has become the main limited-overs spinner for the county with an average of 26.80 in his List A career, at an economy rate of 5.19.

The highlight of last season was his 33 not out from only 13 balls to win a NatWest T20 Blast game against Middlesex under the lights at Chelmsford in June

Phillips said: “I have enjoyed my career and the friendships I have made during my 16 years representing Essex CCC but I am really excited to start a new challenge.

“I would like to take this opportunity to wish the club all the best for the future.”

Essex head coach Paul Grayson said: “Tim has been a very loyal member of our squad over the years, and was a key part of our successful one-day teams.
