Fletcher admits injury to experienced seamer was a "big loss"

India are hoping to know more about the extent of Zaheer Khan's hamstring injury on Friday morning after the seamer was forced off on day one of the first Test against England. Left-armer Zaheer claimed 2-18 for the tourists before he left the field clutching his hamstring midway through his 14th over. The tourists did confirm that he had suffered a strain but are awaiting further reports before making any announcement over his participation in the rest of the match. A team spokesman said: "Zaheer Khan is being looked after by the medical team. He is under investigation now. "It was the hamstring, it was a strain but we are awaiting reports. "The physio is with him now and we will know more possibly by tomorrow morning." Zaheer was comfortably the pick of India's attack on a rain-shortened opening day at Lord's that saw England end on 127-2 after being put into bat. He trapped Alastair Cook lbw for 12 before tempting home captain Andrew Strauss (22) to hook a short ball straight into the hands of Ishant Sharma down at a wide fine leg. "Zaheer bowled very well and it was a big loss when he went off the field," said India coach Duncan Fletcher. "He is a really clever, quality bowler and could have been the one to get the third wicket so it was a real disappointment when he was forced off. "Had he stayed on the field, I think we would have got a third wicket. We might have got four and then it would have been a very good day. "It's important to just wait until tomorrow."
