Alastair Cook admits to doubts about future as England captain

Alastair Cook is having doubts about whether he should carry on as England captain after the Investec Ashes series – but he wants to stay.

Cook has led England to a victorious 3-1 lead in this summer’s Ashes series - sealed with a spectacular victory at Trent Bridge last week - and they have one Test left to play at The Oval next week.

England’s next Test series will take place this autumn in the United Arab Emirates against Pakistan.

And although Cook has not committed 100 per cent to carrying on, he said his "gut" is that he wants to take his team to the Middle East.

“There has been a fair bit of speculation over the last few weeks and months about my position as captain of the team,” he said.

“Now it’s gone really well - I haven’t really totally decided in my mind if I’m being brutally honest. But my gut is pretty much telling me I want to carry on, because we’ve seen the side developing.

“We are nowhere near the finished article and we’ve got some amazing challenges.

“I’d only set my heart on this summer’s Ashes, could we win it or not…but when I woke up the next morning after Trent Bridge, I thought ‘actually I want to win 4-1. I want to go and try and win in Abu Dhabi.’

“If I’m given the opportunity I’d like to. Probably the big thing is not looking too far ahead - take one series at a time and see how you feel.”
