Stuart Broad says England captain Alastair Cook has a burning desire for victory in the final Ashes Test

Stuart Broad has assured England fans the players are desperate to finish the Ashes in style and seal a 4-1 series win with victory at The Oval this week.

Alastair Cook's side have already secured the urn after successive three-day victories at Edgbaston and Trent Bridge gave them a 3-1 lead over Australia heading into the final match in south London, which begins on Thursday.

The players were given an extra couple of days off after beating the tourists by an innings and 78 runs in Nottingham, but Broad admits the players are itching to get back on the field this week.

"There is huge determination," he told Sky Sports News HQ. "Cooky called us all on Tuesday afternoon, which was only a couple of days after the Trent Bridge Test, and said 'I've enjoyed a couple of days off but I'm sat here on my farm and I've got a burning desire to make this 4-1 and I just want to make sure we're all on the same page. Let's get back training.'

"We're training an extra day today to make sure we're in the best possible shape to win, because at the end of the day it's an Ashes Test against Australia. Regardless of the series result, you want to put in performances and get a victory."

Broad says all the players will be keen to play at The Oval despite suggestions the selectors could experiment with the line-up with one eye on the winter series against Pakistan in the UAE, where two spinners are likely to be required.

One player who could return is James Anderson, who missed the fourth Test with a side strain, and he was able to practice on Monday. Anderson will be evaluated further on Tuesday and Wednesday before a final decision is made on his participation.

"We've not gathered as a group yet," added Broad. "Jimmy will be fighting to be fit - he'll be desperate to play.

"It's such an enjoyable environment to be a part of at the moment that every one is desperate to get on that field and get going. It's a great conundrum to have when you've got strength in depth and we have got that at the minute."
