Australia opening batsman Chris Rogers insisted he was happy with his day’s work despite missing out on a century on day two of the first Investec Ashes Test in Cardiff.

Michael Clarke’s side closed on 264-5 in reply to England’s 430 all out, and after scoring 95 from 133 deliveries, Rogers admitted he had been feeling nervous at the start of play on Thursday.

“When I woke up this morning I was pretty nervous, so I would probably have taken that 95,” he told Sky Sports Ashes.

“It’s always disappointing to come so close, though, and not to do a better job for the side.

“It’s such a big series, the Ashes, and I don’t usually start a series too well, so it’s nice to start off okay.

“These are the opportunities you will never get again, so you just try to make the most of them.”

As for his decision to retire from cricket at the end of the Ashes series, the 37-year-old conceded he is finding it harder to cope with top-level cricket at his age.

“I’m old, I can feel it,” he said. “Days in the field are hard work and even just being in this environment is fairly draining.

“Sometimes you think it’s a bit of a young man’s game. I love every moment of it but at some stage you have got to hang the boots up.”
