David Warner has claimed that the Aussies are ready for the third Test

David Warner has denied accusations he failed to applaud England rival Joe Root's first-Test hundred in Cardiff.

Warner was criticised by former Australia opener Matthew Hayden for "failing to recognise" the England batsman's achievement in reaching three figures during the first Investec Ashes Test.

The pair have history dating back to the Aussies' last tour of England in 2013, when Warner was suspended for throwing a punch at Root in a Birmingham bar.

Both men will be back in the city for next week's third Test at Edgbaston, and Warner insists he will always applaud opponents' hundreds, although he could not resist ribbing Root over the length of his celebrations in Cardiff.

He said: "If the camera had stayed on me for the five minutes he celebrated, they'd have seen me clap alongside the other guys.

"The captions they use are always going to be a snapshot of you doing something, and the time that photo was taken was probably a minute-and-a-half after he raised his bat.

"We all clap, we always do and we always will continue acknowledging people's knocks, so it was disappointing it came out that I didn't clap when I did."

Warner is regularly a target for England's more vocal supporters along with team-mate Mitchell Johnson, but the opener said: "When we read the paper at home, they give it to Stuart Broad.

"We sit back and laugh, knowing when we go to England we'll be the ones they have a dig at. You can't keep everyone happy. My job is to score runs, his is to take wickets and do the best for team."

Warner has a reputation for being outspoken but straight-batted several attempts from the assembled press to goad him into criticism of England's selectors, instead backing their decision to promote "world-class" Ian Bell to No 3.

He said: "Bell has a weight of runs behind him, experience and he's world-class. He might be out of touch, but we know what he's capable of. He killed us the last time we were over."

The Aussies have considered the prospect England might play Adil Rashid at Edgbaston, according to Warner, who said: "The way he's been bowling has been fantastic."
