Australia won the toss and chose to bat on the opening morning of the third Ashes Test at Edgbaston as they looked to continue where they left off after their crushing win at Lord's.
England though had other ideas and picked up three wickets in the first hour to leave the tourists struggling at 34-3, the recalled Steven Finn picking up the key wickets of Steve Smith and Michael Clarke after James Anderson had dismissed David Warner.
Chris Rogers and Adam Voges took the visitors through until lunch but after a brief shower delayed the restart, England came out firing with Anderson tearing through the middle-order to leave Australia reeling at 94-7.
Rogers remained and reached his fifty before Broad trapped him lbw. Starc followed soon after before Anderson bowled Lyon to wrap up the innings - Australia 136 all out and Anderson taking 6-47.
England lost Adam Lyth (10) early on but reached stumps on 133-3 - just three runs behind - as Ian Bell made 53, Alastair Cook contributed 34 and Joe Root helped himself to 30no.
