The Ashes 2015: Story of Day Two at Trent Bridge
Friday 7 August 2015 20:12, UK
England will surely regain the Ashes on Saturday after Australia closed day two of the fourth Ashes Test on 241-7, still 90 runs in arrears.
Alastair Cook’s side – already 2-1 up in the series – declared their first innings closed on 391-9 with a cushion of 331 runs before piling the pressure on the tourists’ fragile batting line-up, Ben Stokes claiming 5-35.
Openers Chris Rogers and David Warner both made fifties, while Adam Voges scored an unbeaten 48, but Australia were rocked back by a three-wicket salvo from Stokes shortly before tea.
The visitors collapsed from 113-0 to 136-4, losing four wickets in 27 balls, to all but ensure they will hand back the urn. The Test might have been over inside two days but both Mark Wood and Steven Finn had wickets chalked off for no balls.
England – 274-4 overnight – had earlier declared their first innings closed 15 minutes before lunch, Root finally falling for 130.
Mitchell Starc returned career-best Test figures of 6-111 – his morning spell including the wickets of nightwatchman Mark Wood and Jos Buttler, who were both bowled by full, swinging deliveries.
