England captain Alastair Cook paid credit to former head coach Peter Moores after his side regained the Ashes at Trent Bridge on Saturday.

Moores was appointed as head coach for a second time following England’s 5-0 defeat in Australia during the 2013/14 Ashes series, but was sacked after the drawn series with the West Indies and a disastrous World Cup campaign, in which England were eliminated in the group stages.

The 52-year-old was replaced by former Sri Lanka coach Trevor Bayliss by England’s director of cricket Andrew Strauss in May, but Cook said the progress made under Moores played a part in his side's series win against Australia.

“It’s been an amazing turnaround, a lot has happened behind the scenes,” Cook told Sky Sports.

“We need to thank Peter Moores as well. I know he’s not here but a lot of the guys made huge developments under him as players. You saw a lot of that in this series.

“Trevor has come in and done a fantastic job as well alongside Paul Farbrace and the guys, but we have to remember we did make some strides under Peter Moores so this is for you as well Peter.”
