Ashes 2015: Brad Haddin will fly home for family reasons
Wednesday 12 August 2015 09:37, UK
Australia's Brad Haddin will play no further part in the Investec Ashes series after being released early for family reasons.
Wicketkeeper Haddin, 37, has played 66 Tests for the Aussies and began this tour as first choice behind the stumps, playing in the first Test defeat in Cardiff.
However, he had to miss the second Test at Lord's for personal reasons and, after Australia's victory in that match, the selectors controversially decided to stick with Haddin's replacement Peter Nevill.
Haddin was therefore omitted from the side for the subsequent defeats at Edgbaston and Trent Bridge, as Australia surrendered the Ashes.
Several distinguished former Australia players were outspoken in their view that Haddin should not have lost his place, while coach Darren Lehmann said it had been a very difficult decision but had been made for cricketing reasons.
Although it was thought unlikely that Haddin would be recalled for the fifth Test at The Oval next week, he had continued to work assiduously with Nevill and it was thought he might play in the tour match against Northamptonshire this week.
Instead the veteran, who played a starring role in Australia's 5-0 series win over England two winters ago, was at Heathrow on Tuesday night to begin his trip back home.
Andrew Ramsey, who works for Cricket Australia, tweeted: "Brad Haddin returning home early from Ashes tour for family reasons. Media been asked to respect his privacy."
