Pace bowler Hardus Viljoen has been added to the South Africa squad for the second Test against England in Cape Town, which starts on Saturday.

Viljoen, who has been in fine form in domestic cricket, joins the squad as back-up for seamer Kyle Abbott who is struggling with a hamstring injury.

The Proteas already have serious doubts over Dale Steyn, who injured his shoulder in England's easy first Test win, and previously called up wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock and all-rounder Chris Morris on Wednesday.

Viljoen, 26, is closing on 300 first-class wickets and has impressed in his two games for the Highveld Lions in the opening rounds of the Sunfoil Series, taking 10 wickets in both.

He played for South Africa's A team in Australia in 2014 but is yet to make a senior appearance for his country in any format.

"With a short turnaround between the first and second Tests, we've included Hardus in the squad as a precautionary measure to cover all our bases," said Cricket South Africa convener of selectors Linda Zondi.
