Cricket South Africa (CSA) has announced plans for a new franchise-based Twenty20 competition called the #T20 Global League.

CSA made the announcement after this week's International Cricket Council (ICC) meetings in Dubai, where talks were also held over possible changes to Test match and one-day international schedules.

The CSA plan calls for eight new teams to be created and the governing body has already opened the bidding process by issuing a worldwide tender late on Friday.

Potential franchise owners have until March 3 to express their interest and the league is expected to get underway in the final quarter of 2017.

CSA president Chris Nenzani said: "Our vision is to drive the creation of a new #T20 destination league in South Africa.

"It would energise the sport of cricket in South Africa by creating a global platform for the best-in-class to perform and showcase their talent to a global audience.

"We have received a very favourable response to our plans from the ICC and member boards and look to their support in our endeavour.
