Michael Holding rates the Windies players after the Test series defeat to England

Shai Hope celebrates scoring back-to-back centuries in the second Test

After a humbling defeat at Edgbaston, Windies bounced back to stun England and level the Test series at Headingley. However, Jason Holder's side were unable to claim another shock win as England triumphed at Lord's.

Shai Hope emerged a potential star for the Windies in the coming years but who else stood out? West Indies legend Michael Holding assesses the individual performances and his ratings come with a warning.

"If I'm thinking of marks out of 10 for the West Indies tour," he said. "It is going to be difficult for anyone to get very high marks because the first Test match was so ordinary." Windies beware...

Kraigg Brathwaite - 7
283 runs @ 47.16, one hundred, one fifty (highest score 134)

Kraigg Brathwaite goes on the offensive on day five of the second Test
Image: Kraigg Brathwaite excelled at Headingley but struggled elsewhere

He batted well at Leeds, scored one superb century and almost got another but apart from that he hasn't done a great deal.

Kieron Powell - 5
142 runs @ 23.66 (HS 45)

He got the highest score in the first innings at Lord's but that was only 45. He hasn't really been able to push on. He has made runs and spent a lot of time at the crease but you would have expected with the amount of time he has spent at the crease in some of those innings that we would have been able to go on and score half-centuries and bigger scores.

Kyle Hope - 3
41 runs @ 6.83 (HS 25)

Kyle Hope struggled tremendously. I didn't know what he was capable of before this series, I hadn't seen him before, and from what I have seen in this series I can't give him more than three out of 10.

Shai Hope - 8
375 runs @ 75.00, two hundreds, one fifty (HS 147)

He gets the highest mark of all the Windies players. No one did well at Edgbaston but he batted beautifully at Headingley and Lord's. You need some gems and Shai Hope could be one of the gems for the West Indies that you then start building the team around. He looks to me to be a quality player.

Shai Hope made history by becoming the first player to record two centuries in the same first-class match at Headingley

He looks like someone who should play for many, many years and eventually could be a great West Indian batsman. Not many teams are going to have great batsmen in their teams - they'll have very good ones - but if he can hang around and become a great, they can build around him which would be very important.

Roston Chase - 3
80 runs @ 13.33 (HS 30)
Seven wickets @ 40.42 (best figures 4-113)

Roston Chase did a lot better before he came to England. On this tour I can't give him a pass mark, I couldn't give him more than a three for what he has achieved in this series.

Jermaine Blackwood - 5
187 runs @ 37.40, one fifty (HS 79no)

LEEDS, ENGLAND - AUGUST 29: West Indies batsman Jermaine Blackwood hits out during day five of the 2nd Investec Test Match between England and West Indies
Image: Jermaine Blackwood needs to adapt and play 'proper' Test cricket, according to Holding

I don't particularly like the way he approaches his innings as a batsman, people keep on saying "Jermaine is Jermaine." Well, you still have to learn and adapt to play proper Test match cricket. He did okay to a degree.

Shane Dowrich - 3
24 runs @ 4.80 (HS 14)
Nine catches, no stumpings

Shane Dowrich did absolutely nothing with the bat and he dropped a few catches. He didn't look as if he was going to contribute at any time. He is lucky to get a three.

Jason Holder - 5
Eight wickets @ 39.12 (BF 4-54)
86 runs @ 17.20 (HS 43)

West Indies Jason Holder (second right) celebrates after taking the wicket of England's Tom Westley during day three of the the second Investec Test match
Image: Jason Holder (second right) led his side to a memorable win in Leeds

Jason Holder is an all-rounder by title but he is not dynamic enough with either bat or ball. Considering that he is doing three jobs: batting, bowling and captaining the side, I am adding those up to get to his total.

Devendra Bishoo - 3
Three wickets @ 43.00 (BF 1-27)

He is going to get a three from me. Not because he didn't perform but because he didn't get too many opportunities to perform. I think he should have done a lot more bowling at Leeds, he didn't play at Edgbaston, he played at Lord's but when the team is bowled out for 123, he was never going to get much chance to be involved. Although he is getting a low score, it is not because he played badly.

Kemar Roach - 7
11 wickets @ 29.81, one five-wicket haul (BF 5-72)

Windies' Kemar Roach celebrates dismissing Dawid Malan for 20 on day two of the third Test
Image: Kemar Roach was the pick of the Windies bowlers, says Michael HOlding

He bowled very well, I think he was the best of the West Indies bowlers. He bowled beautifully throughout the entire series and was unlucky to have plenty of catches dropped off his bowling.

Shannon Gabriel - 6
Seven wickets @ 37.42 (BF 4-51)

He played two Test matches and bowled very well at Headingley. He had one session on the fourth day after tea where he got a bit tired and was a little bit wayward but otherwise he bowled very well. Here at Lord's, I don't think he bowled as well as he did at Headingley but he bowled better than his figures would suggest.

Alzarri Joseph - 3
Zero wickets @ N/A (BF 0-109)

He played one Test and had a horrible match. He is another who is lucky to get three but again it is not because I don't think he will be a good cricketer one day, he just had a bad Test match. The state of West Indies cricket at the moment means they have to be trying people like this a little bit too early, as far as I'm concerned, but hopefully he can build on the experience.

Miguel Cummins - 3
One wicket @ 87.00 (BF 1-87)

Similarly to Joseph, he had one Test and didn't do very well in it as the Windies were well beaten.
