Thursday 6 July 2017 21:36, UK
David Gower was joined by Shaun Pollock and, of course, Bob Willis for The Verdict after Joe Root played a starring role on day one of his first Test as England captain.
Root finished the day unbeaten on 184 as England recovered from 76-4 in the morning session to close on 357-5 at Lord's.
While perhaps better known for his scathing assessments when players underperform, Willis is never shy of giving credit where it is due and lavished praise on the new England skipper after his fabulous knock.

We also hear from the man himself about how he prepared himself for his first day leading the side and his thought process as he constructed an innings of immense quality.
But while England can be pleased with the way they fought back after a difficult morning session, South Africa were left to rue missed chances and two very costly no balls with Pollock also questioning why Vernon Philander, who picked up three early wickets, bowled just 13 overs before the second new ball.
Morne Morkel, who claimed the wicket of Gary Ballance, provides the South African players' perspective, expressing their disappointment at not being able to press home their early advantage.
