India paceman Ishant Sharma has been ruled out of the World Cup with a knee injury and will be replaced by Mohit Sharma.

The 26-year-old Ishant has failed to recover from the problem he sustained during the Boxing Day Test against Australia, an injury that kept him out of the Carlton Mid Tri-Series against Australia and England.

The World Cup holders did not win a game during that series and are still seeking their first win since arriving in Australia in November.

Losing Ishant is a further blow to their chances of retaining the trophy as his replacement Mohit has only played in 12 one-day internationals, taking 10 wickets.

There was, however, better news for India's other injury concerns with batsman Rohit Sharma (hamstring), seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar (ankle) and all rounder Ravindra Jadeja (shoulder) all passing fitness tests.

India begin their defence of the trophy against Pakistan in Adelaide next Sunday.
