The Brit Oval
Somerset Sabres 258-9 Innings Complete (M E Trescothick 124, J W Dernbach 5-44) v Surrey Brown Caps 253-9 (M R Ramprakash 115, M A Butcher 56)
Somerset beat Surrey by 5 runs
A century from Marcus Trescothick was just enough to lead Somerset to promotion as they edged out Surrey in their Pro40 Division Two match at the Oval.
The Sabres needed to win to go up to Division One, while Surrey were chasing the victory that would earn a play-off place.
Trescothick scored 124 in Somerset's 40-over total of 258-9, hitting 14 fours and two sixes from 101 balls.
Yet he was almost upstaged by another old hand, as Mark Ramprakash led Surrey's run chase with a magnificent century of his own.
Ramprakash too faced 101 deliveries, smashing 10 fours and two sixes before being run out in the final over.
Surrey needed 10 runs to win from Charl Willoughby's last over, but after settling for a single from the first ball, Ramprakash was run out looking for two off the second.
The home side's bid for victory duly faltered, Jade Dernbach swinging at and missing the final delivery, which needed to go for six.
Dernbach had earlier returned figures of 5-44 from a magnificent eight-over spell.
