New Bangladesh coach wants to improve as a Test-playing nation.

New Bangladesh coach Jamie Siddons has targeted an improvement in Test cricket for his new side. Siddons wants Bangladesh to become competitive in both the one-day and Test forms of the game, but it is the five-day game that is proving to be the big test. 43-year-old Siddons will officially replace fellow Australian Dave Whatmore on 25th November, following Whatmore's decision to quit in May. Siddons has penned a two-year contract with Bangladesh and has immediately set his sights on a big improvement. "I've got some visions for the team. Everything we do will be towards improving the team and see it gets better day by day," said Siddons. Bangladesh have beaten the big teams, with shock results over world champions Australia, South Africa, India and Pakistan in one-day cricket, but their Test record remains poor.

New Ideas

A lot of young talent looks to be emerging from Bangladesh but their lack of experience seems to count more in test match cricket with just one win in 49 Tests since gaining status in 200. "I've got a lot of ideas and it's an opportunity to start my philosophy and coaching techniques with the side," Siddons added. "Hopefully, they'll be a better outfit, play some good cricket and win some matches." Despite some exciting displays at the World Cup, Bangladesh still struggle against the established teams, and Siddons will be targeting an improvement in batting in particular. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) operations chief Gazi Ashraf Hossain said the fact Siddons was a good batsman in his own right was a big plus point. "Batting is our weak area. Siddons was a very good batsman. We hope our batting improves significantly under him," said Lipu. "Our cricket has been suffering from inconsistencies for long. We hope he can fix it up." Siddons takes his new side on a tour of New Zealand for two Tests and three one-day internationals in December, while they host South Africa in February.
