Fast bowler Andre Nel has found himself 'surplus to requirements' after being omitted from South Africa's one-day and Test squads
No place for paceman in Test or ODI squads
Fast bowler Andre Nel has found himself 'surplus to requirements' after being omitted from South Africa's one-day and Test squads to face Kenya and Bangladesh over the next two months.
The experienced Nel came in as a replacement for the injured Dale Steyn in the last two Tests on the victorious tour of England this summer, but has been left out of a 13-man squad to face Bangladesh for the two Tests at the end of November.
There is also no place for Nel in a 14-man one-day squad that will take on Kenya in two matches followed by three against Bangladesh, while a separate list of names were issued for the Twenty20 International against the latter team.
Fellow paceman Makhaya Ntini is included in the Test outfit but has been left out of the one-day side as the selectors begin to build a younger team ahead of the 2011 World Cup.
Vice captain Johan Botha is likely to lead the side against the Kenyans with Graeme Smith unlikely to be fit in time with a tennis elbow injury, while exciting all-rounder Ryan McLaren is in line for a debut providing he is released from his contract with county championship side Kent.
"Johan is to be congratulated on his promotion and he will, in all probability, captain the side in the two matches against Kenya as we only expect Graeme Smith to recover from injury in time for the series against Bangladesh," Cricket South Africa chief executive Gerald Majola told a news conference.
