Sky Sports News, former Lancashire all-rounder Dominic Cork has questioned the Red Rose county's decision to release Stuart Law.
Cork's former club announced on Tuesday that they will not be renewing Law's contract, citing a desire to create more opportunities for youngsters and his allegiance to the Indian Cricket League among the reasons.
Cork, however, believes the Australian-born batsman may have paid the price for outspoken remarks about his own departure from the club.
Former England international Cork, 37, was controversially released at the end of the 2008 season, a decision which prompted disparaging comments from Law about the people at the club "drinking gin and tonics".
Cork, who has since joined Hampshire, told
Sky Sports News: "It is quite a strange decision why you would get rid of someone who has been one of the best batsmen in county cricket and has been the best batsman at Lancashire.

"He still is the best batsman at the club. I just don't understand it.
"I think it has perhaps got a lot to do with the situation that arose around myself when he made a few comments about not being involved in myself being released, and also the ICL is a factor.
"But I think the club should have stuck by him. He is a good leader of men."
Law joined Lancashire as an overseas player seven years ago and - after qualifying as an English cricketer - took over the captaincy for the 2008 season.
He scored almost 12,000 runs in all competitions for the Red Rose after a similarly prolific spell with Essex.
