Lucrative Twenty20 tournament could be held in England in 2009
The England and Wales Cricket Board have confirmed they are examining the feasibility of staging the 2009 Indian Premier League tournament in England and Wales.
The IPL will make a decision on a temporary home by Monday after
deciding to move the second edition of the tournament away from India as security could not be guaranteed due to a date clash with the country's general elections.
The UK, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates have emerged as potential hosts for the richest competition in cricket, which will run from April 10 to May 24.
Cricket South Africa earlier confirmed the IPL have contacted them on the possibility of hosting the second edition of the competition, and the ECB are also now considering the prospect.
Statement
An ECB statement on Sunday read: "The England and Wales Cricket Board have today confirmed that, at the request of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) /Indian Premier League (IPL), ECB is examining the feasibility of hosting the 2009 IPL in England and Wales.
"This request has come to the ECB because of the impact of the timing of the national election in India on the ability to stage the IPL in India.
"The IPL is scheduled to be played between April 10 and May 24, 2009 and officials from both boards have held exploratory discussions to relocate the tournament to England and Wales. Further meetings will be held during the forthcoming week.
"ECB will be making no further comment until these discussions are concluded."
